Do not go in, and do not start cleaning. Sewage carries disease-causing organisms, and household cleaning is not decontamination. The CDC's guidance for anyone handling human waste or sewage is goggles, a splash-proof face covering, waterproof gloves, rubber boots and liquid-repellent coveralls. That is a description of protective equipment, not of a mop and a bucket.
Children and pets out first. CDC disaster cleanup guidance is to keep them away from the affected area until cleanup is finished. Close the door. Keep it closed.
Turn off the air conditioning if the air handler pulls from or blows into the affected area. Running it moves contaminated air through the whole house. Same for box fans pointed into a hallway.
Electricity. Never turn power on or off, or touch anything electrical, while standing in water. If you would have to wade to reach the panel, do not. Call an electrician or your utility.
Stop using water anywhere in the house. Every flush, shower and washing machine cycle adds to what is on your floor. Tell everyone in the building.
If anyone who had contact develops vomiting, stomach cramps or watery diarrhea, call a doctor. The CDC tells sewage handlers to seek medical attention promptly for exactly those symptoms.
Call 911 and leave if you smell gas, or if water is reaching outlets or a live electrical panel.
Why sewage is its own category
The restoration industry works to the IICRC S500 standard, which sorts water into three categories. Category 1 is clean water straight from a supply line. Category 2 carries contaminants. Category 3 is grossly contaminated and can contain pathogenic, toxigenic or other harmful agents. Sewage is the textbook example of Category 3.
Two details in that standard surprise most homeowners. The first is that a toilet backflow originating from beyond the toilet trap is Category 3 regardless of visible content or color. The trap is the curved section of pipe under the bowl. Water pushing back through from past that point has been in the drain line, so it counts as contaminated even when it comes up looking perfectly clear. Judging it by eye is the mistake.
The second is that category is not fixed. Clean water that sits long enough in a warm building degrades, and in a Florida summer that happens fast. A job that started as a clean leak on Friday can genuinely be a Category 3 job by Monday. Same water. Different job.
What the category changes is the plan. Category 1 work is mostly drying. Category 3 work is removing the contaminated material first and drying whatever is left afterwards, in that order, with containment up before anything else happens. Nothing porous that soaked in it gets dried and reused. That is why the first thing an honest contractor does is classify the water rather than reach for a fan.
Stop adding to it
If the backup is in a main drain line, everything the house sends down has nowhere to go but back up through the lowest opening it can find, which is usually a floor drain, a shower pan or a ground-floor toilet. Until the line is clear, the house is filling a bathtub from the wrong end.
- Shut the water use down completely. No flushing, no showers, no dishwasher, no washing machine. This is the single fastest thing you can do and it costs nothing.
- Call your utility first if you are on a public sewer. Many Florida city and county utilities will send a crew to check whether the blockage is in the public main rather than in your service line, and in most systems the public side is theirs to repair. It costs nothing to ask.
- On septic, call a septic contractor instead. A full or failed tank behaves the same way from inside the house.
- Do not pour drain chemicals down it. Caustic cleaner sitting in a blocked line becomes a splash hazard for whoever opens that line an hour later, and it does not clear roots or grease anyway.
- Photograph from the doorway, before anything moves. A wide shot of each affected room, the water line against a baseboard, and a slow video where you say the date and time out loud.
Where it goes that you cannot see
Water on the floor is the smallest part of the problem. It runs under baseboards into the wall cavity, wicks upward into drywall, travels under vinyl plank through the seams, soaks the particleboard toe kick under your cabinets, and finds the subfloor. On a slab there is no crawl space underneath for any of it to fall into, so everything the floor will not absorb spreads sideways until it reaches a wall, and then it starts climbing. A room can look mopped and still be contaminated everywhere the water actually went.
This part does not fix itself with time. Drying a Category 3 floor removes the water and leaves behind everything that was in it, which is why the standard treats contamination and moisture as two separate problems with two separate solutions. Dry is not clean.
A household vacuum. It is not built for water, and a wet vacuum without the right filtration blows fine mist back into the room.
A pressure washer indoors. It turns contaminated water into airborne spray in an enclosed space.
Fans pointed out of the room. You are not drying the problem, you are distributing it. Air movement belongs in a contained job, not one open to your hallway.
What gets thrown out, and what can be saved
The dividing line is porosity. Something water can soak into cannot be cleaned all the way through, so it goes. Something water only sits on can usually be cleaned and kept. CDC and EPA guidance land in the same place.

Photograph everything before it leaves the house, including the pile at the curb. Once it is in a dumpster it stops existing, and you will be asked about it.
What real sewage backup cleanup looks like
Raw sewage cleanup is a containment job before it is a cleaning job. A competent Category 3 job runs in a fixed order, and you can judge a contractor by whether they follow it. Containment goes up first, so the work area is sealed off and air is pulled out of it rather than pushed into it. Crews work in the protective equipment the CDC describes. Standing water comes out with equipment rated for contaminated water. Porous materials come out next, cut back past the wet line. What remains is cleaned and treated with an antimicrobial. Only then does drying start, with meters and daily written readings.
The EPA is direct about the hiring question: where water is known or suspected to be contaminated with sewage, protective equipment and containment are required, and an experienced professional should be brought in if you or your contractor lack expertise in contaminated water work. Remember that sentence if anyone tells you a shop vacuum and a bottle of bleach will do it. It will not.
Drying still runs on the ordinary clock. The EPA's guidance is that materials dried within 24 to 48 hours will in most cases not grow mold, and the CDC says to clean and dry a home within 24 to 48 hours after a flood if possible. One Florida rule matters if mold does appear. Under Chapter 468, Part XVI of the Florida Statutes, mold-related services on more than 10 square feet require a licensed Mold Assessor or Mold Remediator, and §468.8419 bars the same firm from assessing and remediating the same structure within 12 months. What it costs
Restoration in Florida is generally priced per square foot of affected area and by water category, running roughly $3–$4 per square foot for clean water, $4–$7 for category 2, and around $7–$7.50 for category 3, with a typical whole-job total in the $1,300–$5,600 range. Sewage sits at the top of that scale by definition.
Those are published industry figures, not a quote for your house, and we cannot give you one. What moves a sewage job up the range is predictable: how much porous material has to come out, whether the water reached wall cavities and cabinets rather than only the floor, and how many hours passed before anyone stopped it. Why it happened, and stopping the next one
Florida hands sewer lines a specific set of problems. Older neighborhoods still have clay or cast iron laterals that tree roots grow into at the joints, and the state's root systems never go dormant. There is no winter to slow them down. Grease poured down a kitchen sink cools and builds up in a warm line. Wipes sold as flushable do not break down, and the plumber who clears the blockage will usually bring the proof back out on the end of the cable: a matted grey ball of them bound together with grease and hair, which is what the word on the packet turns into once it has been sitting in a six-inch line. On top of that, a hard rain pushes groundwater into the sanitary sewer through cracked pipe and open cleanouts, so a system that copes in dry weather overflows in a storm. That is why backups cluster around tropical systems, sometimes with a lift station outage on top of everything else.
Once the emergency is over, three things are worth asking a licensed plumber about: a backwater valve on the main line, a camera inspection to see whether roots or a belly in the pipe are the real cause, and where your cleanout actually is. That last one sounds trivial until it is eleven at night. In most Florida yards the cleanout is a white plastic cap sitting flush in the grass somewhere between the house and the street, and plenty of them have been mowed over, sodded over or buried under a flower bed by the third owner, so the crew loses twenty minutes finding it before they can start.
Tell your landlord, property manager or association immediately, and follow up in writing so there is a timestamp. In multi-family buildings the shared line is often the source, the shutoff may be somewhere you are not allowed to go, and what came up in your unit may be coming from someone else's. Do not start work on a shared line yourself.
If the water reached more than one room, work through house flooded — the first 24 hours. If it came down from a ceiling rather than up through a floor, treat the ceiling as a structural hazard first: see ceiling water damage and burst pipe water damage.
